Nuthatch and Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Watercolor /
Animals
From my own backyard, I had been able to study and sketch our birds and their
behaviors. I combined these with sketches of our leaves and trees
to create this full-size painting. Though I had taken a more botanical approach
to portraying the leaves, I was challenged to maintain movement throughout
the design.
The leaves were moved rhythmically around the composition,
with the birds gradually worked into their natural environment.
Notice how the only place with brighter colors is in the leaves closest
to the birds. This helps to emphasize the birds as the subject of the painting, while
keeping the red-feathered crown of the woodpecker from being overpowering.
The slide of this image makes the dark colors appear darker than they are in the
actual painting.
