Pattern of Wings
Other Media (watercolor with colored pencils) /
Animals
I wanted to do this painting after seeing a particularly striking
moth in my garden early one morning.
This painting began with a loose watercolor base, purely to capture
the initial design elements. This allowed me to lift out the loose shapes
of the moths initially.
Once the painting had dried,
I began to apply layer after layer of colored pencil to fill in the details.
Additionally, to keep the main moth as the center of attention, he was precisely detailed
while elements around him were more subtly and loosely portrayed.
Notice the textural effect of the soft wings in the background compared to the tree bark.
I like the realistic color scheme of this painting, it stayed very true to life for this scene from nature.
