Lush Vista: Shadows and Light
Pastels /
Landscape
To create this image, I worked from on-site sketches done at a local park,
combined with notes in my sketchbook that documented the
colors and quality of light at the scene for my references.
I worked to capture the very linear shadows through the copse of trees,
while sunlight filters down from above onto the creek and lush grasses.
Completed on pastel-grade drawing paper, the pastels were gradually
built up layer upon layer. The first layers
were very thin, using my hardest grain pastels. As each additional layer
was added, I moved towards thicker strokes in softer pastels, for the final
touches of light to the grasses and foliage.
