Moonlit Headwaters Hudson River

Located along the headwaters of the Hudson River, this scene captures
the region at nightfall. As with most night scenes, I cannot paint directly
on location. Instead I use daylight photos for references, and sketches
combined with my notations regarding quality of light at the scene.
Painted on smooth linen canvas, the sky and waters contrast against the darker depths
of the trees and their shadows. I do find night paintings
challenging to do, the colors in this one were built up through many carefully glazed layers.
