To create this image, I referred to a combination of my own sketches, reference
photographs, studies I had painted from life, and the view of my garden.
I pushed the design features of the flowers shapes here, emphasizing the monarch
as the focal point. The distant flowers have deliberately been kept more muted,
to contribute to a quieter mood. This painting, as well as the three other monarch
images, were done in a more rectangular format as a deliberate compositional challenge
for myself.
