Butterfly Garden: Tiger Swallowtail on Chinese Forget-Me-Nots

Combining the view of my garden out the window, I also used my
butterfly photos sitting by the computer as further references for this painting.
I tried to keep this very softly lit to set the mood, with only
hints of summer shadows in the cool color of the leaves in the foreground.
Using the cool colors in the foreground and warmer colors in the background was
a deliberate reversal on my part of the traditional approach. In the traditional
way of painting the green colors in a landscape, the greens fade from warm to cool shades
over distance. As a challenge, I sometimes like to reverse this rule and place
cooler blue-greens in the front by the viewer, reflecting the tint of the sky.
This gives a soft illumination to the painting, as the light seems to move
forward through the image, while the foliage softly encircles
the backlit image of the butterfly.
